It broke out on January 22, 1863 in the Kingdom of Poland and on February 1, 1863 in Lithuania, and lasted until the fall of 1864.

It took over the territories annexed by Russia.

It was the largest and the longest lasting Polish national uprising, met with the support of international public opinion. It was a guerrilla war.
