The State Police of the Second Polish Republic was established by the Act of July 24, 1919, as a unified force responsible for maintaining public order and security.

Its creation was a response to the need to standardize law enforcement services in the territories regained after the partitions.

The organizational structure was partially modeled on German and Austrian solutions, combining elements of military discipline with a civilian service.

Officers were responsible for combating common crime, maintaining public order, and countering subversive activities.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the State Police developed its criminal investigation division, utilizing, among other things, modern fingerprinting methods and police records.

Police officers were bound by a strict code of ethics and discipline, and recruitment required a clean criminal record, an unblemished reputation, and military service.

Despite high demands and growing prestige, the force frequently struggled with staff shortages and a limited budget. During the interwar period, police officers also played a crucial role in the fight against communist organizations and the activities of robbery gangs in the Eastern Borderlands.

During the September Campaign of 1939, State Police officers participated in the defense of the country, and after the capitulation, many of them were arrested by the occupiers.

As a result of the Katyn Massacre, thousands of police officers were sent to NKVD camps and murdered, and the police force itself ceased to exist with the fall of the Second Polish Republic.
