Kijowianka (or petlurówka) is the general name for a soft English-style cap. After the first contacts of the Western Entente countries with Russia, it appeared among the senior officers of the tsarist army as a fashionable and modern headgear. According to some, it was supposed to be modeled on British Service Dress Caps or Trench Caps. The fact is that this typeface is an evolution of something between Eastern Carthusians and Polish Maciejówkas.

After the fall of tsarism, it was introduced to the Ukrainian army by Hetman Paweł Skoropadski. Used by the Army of the Ukrainian People's Republic and also replaced the mazepynka from the Ukrainian Galician Army. It was the only army that used this type of headgear en masse.

The official cut of the Kiev shirt was introduced by the dictator's order No. LXXIV of August 18, 1919, which specified its exact dimensions and characteristics, e.g. the colors of the weapon on the rim and the regiment number on the button. Sources, however, show that the Ukrainian army at that time did not have the facilities to uniformly uniform its soldiers.

The kiewianka cut was also sometimes used by Polish forces in the East in the form of the 4th Polish Rifle Division fighting in Ukraine, as well as the 5th Polish Rifle Division in Siberia. Then occasionally seen during the Polish-Bolshevik war on both sides of the conflict.
